Potential Operations Impact due to Inclement Weather
January 12, 2024
TO: UMMC Faculty, Staff and Students
FROM: Dr. Jonathan Wilson, Chief Administrative Officer
SUBJECT: Potential Operations Impact due to Inclement Weather
Updated National Weather Service models predict severe cold temperatures beginning Sunday afternoon with below-freezing temperatures continuing until Wednesday afternoon. Currently, NWS in Jackson is forecasting a limited threat of wintry mix for Central Mississippi that could include sleet or freezing precipitation.
Planning began several days ago to prepare UMMC facilities, roads and grounds for the impact of severely low temperatures over several days and the possibility of freezing precipitation. Maintaining critical operations and keeping you and our patients safe are top priorities. We provide essential services to our communities and should maintain normal operations when possible.
At this time, there are no planned changes to class schedules or business hours. No alterations or cancellations to any standard operations are authorized. Should this change, details will be shared through email and other official communication channels, including AlertU. If you have not signed up to receive emergency notifications, you can do so using the instructions found here.
Until further notice, students should expect to maintain a normal schedule. Any changes to classes or other academic schedules will be announced via Campus Memo. Students with clinical assignments should report for duty as scheduled if they can safely reach the Medical Center. Otherwise, they should notify their respective supervisor.
Employees should be familiar with the Inclement Weather and Emergency Events policyand the guidelines it provides in instances when normal operations are altered or you are unable to maintain your regular work schedule due to weather. Employees should maintain a normal working schedule unless directed differently by their manager following official institutional notification of change in operations.
If operational changes are authorized by UMMC executive leadership, employees should refer to the policy for how their normal working schedule may be impacted, if at all. Managers can run a Workday report by searching for “Worker Inclement Weather Category” to see how each employee under them is categorized in the three service levels – Green, Yellow or Red – which are defined in the policy. Employees can find their own Inclement Weather Category designation by going to their profile in Workday and clicking on “Job.”
If an employee is not required to be on-site or weather and travel conditions make it impossible for them to report to work, the following options are available, subject to manager approval and only after communication with your manager:
Non-exempt employees:
- Request personal leave
- Take the day as unpaid (please use “UnpaidLv” code in Kronos)
- Make up time within the same pay period, if approved by the manager in advance
- Work remotely (with manager approval)
Exempt employees:
- Request personal leave
- Work remotely (with manager approval)
Thank you.
